The Smart Remote 3 for nRF52 product example will be on as soon as the batteries are inserted. The DK add-on can be powered either from the USB or from the batteries.
Follow the steps below to power up the DK add-on:

Plug in the USB cable or insert batteries into the battery compartment.

If powered from the USB, turn on the power with the power switch. If powered
from the batteries, it will be on as soon as the batteries are inserted.
